WordCamp Phoenix is organized and run entirely by volunteers and we need you to help make it a success!
Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back to the local WordPress community and it’s the best way to meet other WordPressers and make new friends.
We welcome anyone to apply to volunteer, no matter your abilities! You don’t need any prior experience and you don’t need to be a WordPress or WordCamp veteran. No specialized skills are required.
Please read through the following to get an idea of the responsibilities for volunteers, and feel free to contact Thomas Levy, our Volunteer Wrangler.
Volunteer Duties
We will all share responsibility for the following tasks, and if your abilities mean one task is more fitting than others, we will absolutely accommodate!
- Registration – At the registration table you’ll greet and check-in the WordCamp attendees and provide them with their badges.
- Swag – At the swag table you’ll distribute conference t-shirts, stickers, buttons, and other awesome swag!
- Emcee – As an emcee, you’ll be responsible for introducing speakers and facilitating transitions between sessions from the stage. Personality plus and high energy are a must for this position.
- Room Monitor – As a room monitor you’ll help our speakers set up for their presentation, facilitate Q&A sessions, and ensure speakers stay on schedule.
- Lunch Facilitator – When lunch is served, you’ll help direct attendees to the eating area and help ensure no one returns to the presentation rooms hungry.
- Hall Monitor – Hall monitors roam the camp and help or direct attendees during camp.
- IT Support – If you’re technologically savvy you may want to act as IT Support for our speakers. This role will include helping speakers get setup and connected to wifi, audio, and presentation systems.
- Video Expert – If you’re comfortable working a video camera and microphone you can assist in making sure all our presentations are recorded, processed, and uploaded to WordPress.tv.
- Photographer – Our volunteer photographers will help us document our event by taking pictures during the event and sharing them with the organizers and attendees following camp.
- Setup and tear down – A few hours prior to the start of the event you’ll help setup and you’ll stay late to aid with cleanup after the attendees leave.
- Happiness Desk – Our Happiness Desk is a live WordPress support desk where attendees can get real-time help with their WordPress problems and questions.
- General help – You are a friendly and helpful resource for all our attendees. You don’t have to know the answer to every question but you’ll know who to find when you’re stumped.
Things to Note
Time Commitment – Ideally you are able to volunteer for two full days (Friday, February 9, and Saturday, February 10) and we ask that you only apply if you can commit for at least one full day.
Code of Conduct – As a volunteer, you agree to adhere to the WordCamp Code of Conduct.
Free Admission – You will be provided with free admission to the conference but you are expected to work. You will have plenty of time to enjoy the conference but your first responsibility is to your volunteer responsibilities.
Compensation – While we do greatly appreciate your time, this is a volunteer role and we are unable to provide any compensation outside of the aforementioned free admission. If you are planning to travel to Phoenix to volunteer you will be solely responsible for your travel expenses and arrangements.
Conference Tickets – Applying does not guarantee you will be accepted as a volunteer. If you’re worried about not getting a general admission ticket we suggest you buy a ticket today. If you’re accepted as a volunteer we will refund your ticket!
Scheduling – You will be provided with a schedule prior to the conference. If there are specific presentation(s) you’d like to see make sure you let us know and we’ll do our best to ensure you can attend.
Questions – If you have any questions about volunteering, please send a message to our volunteer wrangler, Thomas Levy!
